Internal Competitions Explained

Document Status: Currently in Draft
Introduction
The club runs 8 internal competitions, to encourage members in their pursuit of improving their skills and to share the results with everyone. Photos entered into internal competitions are the primary source of entries by the club into external competitions.

Digital versions of all entries, including prints, are uploaded to sync.com so that members may view them at any time and the external competitions selection committee have easy access to them during their selection meetings. The selection committee is led by the External Competitions Secretary, assisted by a small number of members, seconded by him (or her).

Trophies are awarded for the winners of all the competitions. A “Photographer of the Year” is awarded to the member who has been most successful during the year. The author of every entry which is noted by the judge as commended, highly commended or in the top three of each section, will be presented with a certificate noting that achievement.

Photographer of the Year Process
To assess who is best, every submission into every competition is awarded 1 point, every commended entry is awarded an additional 1 point, every highly commended entry is awarded an additional 2 points, every entry coming third is awarded an additional 3 points, every entry coming second is awarded an additional 4 points and every winning entry is awarded an additional 5 points, so a total of 6 points. A running total is kept by the internal competitions’ secretary and the member with the most points after all 8 competitions is awarded the accolade of Photographer of the Year!

The competitions held are as follows:
1) Theme 1 (This will be confirmed in advance)
2) Don Harris Memorial (Mono only)
3) Natural History
4) Open DPIs
5) Theme 2 (This will be confirmed in advance)
6) Portrait
7) Open Prints
8) Grand Slam

Trophy Details
Projects: The two themed subjects are chosen each year by the club committee. These two competitions are grouped together with the two open competitions, collectively called Projects. The points collected in each category, Colour Prints, Mono Prints and DPIs are added together, leading to the award of 3 trophies for Projects.

Natural History Competition: The judge is asked to choose an overall winner from the winners of the two sections. The other winner is then declared “Best in Class”.
